Wash Park is not an off leash area, as is clearly posted in the park. I've seen owners get tickets (and I hope they give more). Dog owners who choose to live in Denver are themselves responsible if they're too lazy or too busy to walk their dogs properly, or if they feel that even a good (leashed) walk isn't enough. They either should have know about the law, or chose to ignore it. The rest of us are not responsible if the result is a hardship on dogs -- the owners are. From the looks of it (I live on the Park) expecting responsible caretaking from many dog owners is just asking too much. So many continually ignore the signs saying that dogs should not be allowed to swim in lakes, whose water, the result of decades in run-off from south-Denver lawns and gulches and fecal chloroform from resident waterfowl, is hazardous to the health of the dogs. Instead of petting the dog or welcoming it back into their house after a nice swim, why not just go lick the inside of a big bag of fertilizer (or maybe the sewer grate on a local street). Please, if you can’t take care of your dog in a way that respects the community, including the laws that are there to protect your pet and your neighbors – then move somewhere else. But I guess that would be the responsible thing to do.
